With the economy heading into recession, it's more important than ever workers achieve job security and receive the compensation they're entitled. Free Choice Act Deserves Support
The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) is a proposed federal law that would make the process of forming a labor union fairer. Our congressman, Mike Michaud, is for it. But our two U.S. senators, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, have helped prevent the bill from even coming to a vote. I hope in the coming year they will reconsider their position and allow this important piece of legislation to be voted on by the U.S. Senate. >> Read the full article

The Right to Unionize
It's good that the Bangor Daily News highlights the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ("Eleanor's Declaration," Dec. 8) and that the BDN states that "few in the West would argue these basic claims that come with being human." One aspect of the human rights declaration not mentioned is "Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests" (Article 23, Section 4). >> Read the full article
